- 1. You need StepMania. Stepmania 4.0 alpha 5 is my choice.
- 2. Use Stepmania Tools to import your song to Stepmania.
- 3. Launch Stepmania, Edit/Sync Songs, choose the song you imported, and select Dance -Single (it's the default) and Create New, then Edit Existing takes you to the editor.
- F7 and F8 lowers or raises the BPM of the song.
- F9 and F10 will add and change the length of a delay before continuing. This just gets translated to a longer gap between tappers.
- F11 and F12 decrease or increases the audio start time, which makes it easy to synch notes up to beats. Always use a negative value for this, since the TTR engine will not allow notes to start ahead of the audio.
- The left and right arrow keys will adjust the note length, allowing you to space notes by quarter beats, half beats, third beats, 6ths, 8ths, 12ths, 16ths, 24ths and 32nds.
- Up and Down moves you through the measure, and so does PgUp and PgDn. Home and End will move you to the beginning and the last note.
- The 1-4 keys will add or remove notes. Holding Shift while doing this creates a shake (mine); moving up and down while holding the key creates a hold.
- The leftmost lane will be the left column in TTR, the second lane will be center column, the right lane is the right column. The third lane currently translates to the center column as well, and duplicate notes are automatically purged during conversion. It's just useful to copypaste sections of the song through the Enter menu.
- Yeah, check the Enter menu for some cool editing options. And by hitting Escape you'll find the options to save, rename the track and artist, and preview the track without leaving the editor. This way you can playtest without having to SSH the thing. The arrow keys will correspond to their lanes in TTR. If you can tap Magnificent on your notes in the preview then it will be perfectly synched in TTR. If not, tweak the starting offset or the BPM a bit to adjust. There's also a tick assist by pressing F4, but it will trick you into thinking your notes are in sync when they are actually slightly early. In other words, playtest it anyways.
- Save it, exit and run Stepmania Tools, Export Song, choose the track or tracks to export, Export as One, name the zipfile, wait a few seconds, find and extract the zipfile to a folder of it's own. Or if you're on Win98 or less, just find the .sm file in your Stepmania install.
- Use the converter on the .sm file and it will spit out a tapfile and infofile. Convert the audio to m4a, and locate appropriate album artwork. Then place the four files in a folder with the .track suffix and SSH in.
